Biostatistic Water, commonly referred to as bacteriostatic or sterile water for injection, is a specially prepared water used in laboratory and clinical research to reconstitute lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides. It is designed to maintain the sterility and integrity of peptides during reconstitution, storage, and application in research settings.

Description

Function & Purpose

The primary function of biostatistic water is to safely dissolve peptide powders without introducing contaminants or destabilizing the peptide chains. Its sterile composition prevents bacterial growth and minimizes peptide degradation, preserving potency and molecular stability.

Chemical Properties

Biostatistic water is ultrapure, non-pyrogenic water that has been filtered and sterilized. Some formulations may contain 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative to extend shelf life after opening. Its pH is generally adjusted to ~5.5–7.0 to ensure compatibility with peptide bonds.

Why It’s Used for Peptides

Peptides are highly sensitive to contaminants and pH imbalances. Biostatistic water is ideal for peptide reconstitution because it:

  • Maintains sterility during multiple withdrawals
  • Prevents bacterial growth (with benzyl alcohol)
  • Is non-reactive with amino acid chains
  • Dissolves peptides quickly and cleanly for research use

Sterility & Storage

Once a vial is opened, the presence of benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic water allows safe usage for up to 28 days if stored at 2–8°C (refrigerated). Single-use sterile water, by contrast, must be discarded immediately after opening. Always use sterile technique when handling.

Comparison with Other Solvents

Bacteriostatic Water: Contains benzyl alcohol, extends usage to 28 days. Ideal for multiple withdrawals.

Sterile Water: No preservatives; single-use only. Must be discarded after opening.

Acetic Acid (0.6%): Used to stabilize certain peptides like GHRH analogs. May be more acidic.

Sodium Chloride (0.9%): Can be used in specific cases, though compatibility varies by peptide.

Usage Notes

  • Always consult reconstitution instructions specific to each peptide. • Use sterile syringes and alcohol swabs to maintain vial integrity. • Typical reconstitution volumes range from 1 mL to 5 mL depending on peptide concentration requirements.
